Thanks so much for the prompts to Na/GloPoWriMo – The Canadian Museum of History and Jane Yeh’s fabulous poem Why I Am Not a Sculpture.

Why I Am Not a Work of Art
not a watercolour
the background wash a permanent blue
not an oil painting
touch-ups and layering possible indefinitely
not a stamp
symbolizing values
not a totem
carved to represent family, a group, a place
not a house
carpentered to shelter others
not a quilt
cloth cut to pieces
stitched together orderly
crimson, lemon, sapphire
rainbows of resilience
Because I am a tree
my trunk leans with prevailing winds
branches twist around neighbours
my shape reveals
seasons of sunshine and moisture
spring blizzards and drought
my roots tunnel deep
babbling forest gossip
although touched by fire
this year my leaves furl for spring
Because I once was a seed
landed on rich soil
a sapling watered, protected
until grown
large
enough
to survive
