Day 23 NaPoWriMo - In Training

Today's NaPoWriMo prompt took me unexpected places and an inordinate amount of time to fulfill.

"Write a poem that has multiple numbered sections. Attempt to have each section be in dialogue with the others, like a song where a different person sings each verse, giving a different point of view. Set the poem in a specific place that you used to spend a lot of time in, but don’t spend time in anymore."

In Training

1. Limbs entwined, undesired

intimacy leads to distance

in the morning commute.

Mashup of minty toothpaste,

herbal essences, garlic,

old spice, coffee.

2. Commuter ads persuade passengers

in only six months

they could

have a career in health care,

a whiter smile,

a restraining order.

3. Cannabis scent permeates

the car and I consider

the suspects close to me.

a. Young, Canada Goose

jacket, Coach purse.

b. Cashmere camel

coat, gym bag.

c. Middle-aged puffer,

European-fit pants.

d. Khaki green bomber,

baggy blue jeans, backpack.

4. Maximum human density

at the last stop

before the river.

Free-riders sixth sense kicks in,

fight their way to exit

when transit authorities enter.

Commuters palm out

stamped tickets, transfers.

Rooting in gym bag, rich coat

starts talking but escorted off. Never

can tell who.

5. Covid mask checks confuse

the free-riders.

Ghost trains carry those

with no choice.
