Thanks to Na/GloPoWriMo for :
“today’s (optional) prompt is inspired by a poem that’s an old favorite of mine, by Kay Ryan.
Crustacean Island
Ryan’s poem invites us to imagine the “music” of a place without people in it. So today, try writing a poem that describes a place, particularly in terms of the animals, plants or other natural phenomena there. Sink into the sound of your location, and use a conversational tone. Incorporate slant rhymes (near or off-rhymes, like “angle” and “flamenco”) into your poem. And for an extra challenge – don’t reference birds or birdsong!”
A birdless poem?!

Summer Sizzle
The pair of us walk through the field not talking, single file on a cattle path. Flies fizz toward us, tiny planes buzzing the tower. A bee raises herself from the clover to our luminous t-shirts. She’s a fighter jet assessing sweat and Fructis shampoo means no nectar to sip. “Shhhh” We sneak up to the edge of the dugout. Rustling grass must give us away. The muskrat plips into the water, glides to weeds on the opposite side. A sizzling day we laze on the bank and spy high above us, circling feathers silently surveying us.
